Oral Tumors

Oral tumors (growths or masses in the mouth) are relatively common in both dogs and cats. The good news is that many of these tumors have an excellent prognosis if treated early—which is why prompt diagnosis and treatment are so important.

Symptoms of Oral Tumors

The signs of oral tumors can vary depending on the type, size, and location of the growth. Some tumors, may be darkly pigmented or appear cauliflower-like, while others may simply look like a swollen area on the gums.

How Are Oral Tumors Diagnosed?

A thorough oral exam under anesthesia is usually needed for diagnosis. This allows the veterinarian to carefully examine the entire mouth perform dental radiographs, and collect a tissue or bone biopsy.

The biopsy sample is then sent to a Veterinary Oral Pathologist, who studies the cells under a microscope—a process called histopathology. This test not only identifies the type of tumor but also helps predict how it is likely to behave:

  • Will it stay local?

  • Will it spread to other parts of the body?

  • What treatment options will give the best outcome?

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Catching oral tumors early makes a big difference. Many pets do well with surgery or other treatments when tumors are diagnosed promptly. The sooner a mass is biopsied and treated, the better the chances of a successful outcome and a longer, healthier life for your pet.
